In order to maintain its economic role for the Brussels region, the port has to improve its integration into the metropolitan environment. 

The Port of Brussels is following a policy of urban integration of the port zone. This means, opening the port for the population of the Region of Brussels by creating new public spaces, walking zones, etcetera to the benefit of the population.  

The basic mechanism is a long negotiation procedure with all regional stakeholders (the Region, municipalities, private companies, etcetera). 

Requalification of the port area/ opening of the port for the population/ increased attraction of the port for leisure activities/ multi-purpose use of the waterway. 

The population of the Brussels Capital Region, as they will benefit more from the presence of water (the canal) for leisure activities.
