UK National Audit Office Report: How European cities achieve renaissance
Introduction
Urban renewal is an important point on the agenda of most European regions and cities. Because manufacturing and older industries decline, new ways of attracting capital have to be found. The renewal and adjustment of social, physical and environmental infrastructure is seen as a succesful way to revitalise regions, cities, districts and neighbourhoods. The 'How European cities achieve renaissance' publication of the UK National Audit Office, looks at seven European cities or regions and how they were able to deliver succesful regeneration projects. It provides interesting material for all people involved in urban regeneration projects.
Description
Successful urban regeneration is not easy for European cities to accomplish. This publication investigates seven large-scale regeneration projects in Europe that have been succesfully implemented. Seven critical factors that helped to bring about success were identified, namely:
  • A clear shared vision
  • Clear and strong leadership
  • A clear implementation plan
  • A network of partners eager to deliver
  • Marshalling of the resources needed
  • Central support for partners
  • Monitoring of progress and assessment of impact
The publication forms a companion piece to the UK National Audit Office report 'Thames Gateway: Laying the Foundations'.
The following cities/projects were examined:
  • Barcelona
  • London Docklands
  • Lille
  • Manchester
  • Malmö
  • Rotterdam
  • Ruhr, Emscher Park
