Porta 22 - New Jobs Space - Barcelona, ES
Introduction
Porta 22 is an innovative service of Barcelona Activa -the Local Development Agency of Barcelona- designed to offer information, training and personalised assessment about new occupations, emerging economic sectors, new cultures of work, and new employment opportunities that are generated from within the Knowledge Society. In 2004 Porta 22 received the prize Telecities “E-Citizenship for All” awarded by the Eurocities Knowledge Society Forum.
Problem
Adaptability, proactive, organisation, creativity, management of change, team work, multi skilled, are the identifying characteristics of what, according to opinions widely shared, is the professional of our times. Porta 22 was conceived from the principle as a tool for getting quality information about new occupations, new work cultures closer to the citizens, as well as information about employment opportunities generated by the Knowledge Society.
The general aim of Porta 22 is to detect and spread the changes in the world of work. Among the specific objectives, it is worth highlighting that of fostering the development of personal autonomy of the users in the processes of:
  • Professional orientation, in a dynamic work setting and in constant change.
  • Employment search, taking into account the role of internet and the new technologies and the more recent trends in techniques for looking for work.
  • Training search, taking into particular account new realities such as virtual training, life long learning and hybrid profiles.
  • Creation of their own activity, having as the point of reference the emerging sectors and the business opportunities generated around them.
Description
Porta 22 was initiated in 2003 and it was born out of the will to give responses to the transformations that have taken place in the labour world in recent decades as a consequence of important changes in the demographic structure of the population, of the growing incorporation of new technologies, of the new role of the woman in the labour market, and of the new needs of people and companies. Occupations that didn't exist have emerged with strength, others have been deeply transformed.
Approach
The Porta 22 facility, open access ad free of charge, has a surface of 2.000 m2. It is made up of different spaces designed to offer an integral service:
  • A powerful self access intranet, by means of which a large amount of digital contents are presented among which should be highlighted the 700 descriptive information sheets about the new professional profiles.
  • The 150 audiovisual real testimonies by people and companies dedicated to new occupations.
  • The 15 multimedia applications about strategic aspects when looking for employment and professional development.
  • Four points of personalised attention without prior appointment to balance out the imbalances between the different levels of autonomy of the people.
  • A large area of classes, to give life to a programme of activities that allow the sharing experiences of reflection, training and learning.
  • A mediateque, with more then 900 specialised books and publications.
  • A space for temporary exhibitions to offer a dynamic and original vision of the topics covered within the framework of the project.
