Social integration housings for the gypsy ethnic group in Madrid

Introduction

Social Integration Housings are accommodations assigned to people in need of social protection.

Problem

Families of Gypsy Ethnicity living in shanty towns suffer from social exclusion: only 30% have the basic civil documents; there is only a 42% of chidren's schooling; 75% of the people hace access to sanitary services; family planning is scarce.

Description

Social Integration Housings are conceived with a great amount of flexibility, in order to adapt themselves to the needs of the different social groups and, in particular, of people of Gypsy Ethnicity.

The main objectives of this action are:

Establish the concept of Social Integration Housing.
Provide not only housing, but also specific installations that improve the quality of life.
Place the families in areas that have complementary resources for their education and training, as well as other equipments.
Sign agreements with the institutions in charge of the re-accommodation process.
Perform an effective monitoring.
Support the adaptation of the families.

Results

2,344 families have received a lodging (people with disabilities, former drug-addicts, single parent families, ethnic minorities).

The agreements signed with the Institute for Re-Accommodation and Social Integration allowed the re-accommodation of 660 families.
