Dutch cities in 2015
Introduction
In cooperation with RIGO Research and Advice, the Stichting Atlas voor Gemeenten ("Foundation Atlas for Municipalities") composed an atlas that describes urbanisation in the Netherlands in the year 2015, entitled "The Netherlands in 2015: Material for exploring the future".
Description
The current Dutch national Urban Policy will officially terminate in 2009. This atlas provides insight into how the Urban Policy should be followed up. This survey is not limited just to cities but also provides a complete picture of the Netherlands. Such a national survey is needed, since future metropolitan phenomena will not be limited to the large cities as we know them today. The atlas focuses on the population in cities, employment and the job market, mobility and the housing market.
Conclusions
In population developments, it is important to examine not just static predictions but also the underlying dynamics. The atlas conveys the following key factors in graphic form:
  • Housing supplies are of great importance to the population dynamics of cities and their vicinities.
  • Employment is represented by lists of employment figures compared to the national index, the availability of jobs, and employment in sectors offering both few and many opportunities.
  • Accessibility to and from cities is crucial for the cities themselves.
Based on these key factors, a number of maps are used to indicate the opportunities in the labour market for various population groups. Special attention is devoted to the prediction relating to the poorly educated urban population in the year 2015.
