Introduction
The Thessaloniki workshop dealt with the issue of urban migration and social sustainability including issues of housing need and provision and community development
Description
This socio metrex project evaluates the causes of population movement and generators of housing demand.
Background information
The project goal is to bring together practitioners in metropolitan spatial planning and development in a series of expert group workshops to identify, through case study experience, the specific ways in which the strategic planning process can contribute to social sustainability and integrated urban social, economic and environmental sustainability can be achieved.
EU involvement
In order to promote and foster networking METREX meets biannually, holds a conference biennially and its activities include Expert Groups working on issues of common interest and projects within European Commission Programmes.
Conclusions
•Migration within the city, further driven by the influx of in migrants, takes place for many reasons, including:
a improving quality of life
b moving nearer to places of employment
c a search for cheaper housing
d change in family size
e better services (schools, access to public transport etc.)
f integration into social community
• New residential districts are growing up on the outskirts. There are plans for a metropolitan railway, an underwater tunnel, a new outer ring road and new interchanges, the protection of the environment and the programmed organisation of such events as Expo 2007/8 and a newly developed social policy.
