Code of practice on racial equality in housing - UK
Introduction
A statutory code of practice for racial equality which covers all areas of housing in England.
Description
The code of practice looks at the legal context, and explains the implications of the Race Relations Act 1976 and other relevant laws and instruments for the functions of all housing organisations, and for all housing tenures. It makes recommendations on good practice in ten key areas of housing:
  • governance and the role of governing bodies
  • new and improved housing
  • sales and lettings
  • mortgage lending and insurance
  • homelessness and housing advice
  • neighbourhood regeneration and integration
  • tenancy and housing management
  • racial harassment and anti-social behaviour
  • contractors and procurement
  • the involvement of residents and tenants.
The main outcomes which housing organisations can expect to see by following the code's recommendations are listed.  Advice on training, monitoring and race equality impact assessment is given. Exceptions to the general prohibition of racial discrimination and harassment under the Race Relations Act are listed.
