The consumption of electricity and heat is not only dependent on the technical condition of the dwellings but very much of the way the dwellings are used. The Danish Building Research Institute has investigated why a number of similar semi-detached houses in Albertslund (a suburban in the Copenhagen region) had great disparity in energy consumption.

The significant differences in consumption of energy for heating are very much due to differences in the building conditions. The differences in consumption of electricity are much dependent on how many electrical devices the households have and not on the energy efficiency.For both heat and electricity consumption the residents’ attitude to consumption is decisive for their consumption of energy. An attitude for less consumption is not always a part of an attitude that cares for the environment.
