Innovation and environmental sustainability strategies in the Municipal Housing and Land Company - Madrid, ES
Introduction
The new promotions of the Municipal Housing and Land Enterprise of Madrid include techniques to improve environmental sustainability and comfort.
Description
The Municipal Housing and Land Enterprise of Madrid carries out the policies of the City Council in the fields of social housing and urban areas rehabilitation. It promotes the creation of around 1.000 housing units yearly.
In 1999, the enterprise decided to progressively introduce environmental sustainability criteria in their actions, such as energy efficiency, reduction of emissions, use of renewable sources of energy, improvement in quality and comfort…
Approach
The main actions involved in the project are:
  • Seven Projects of residential buildings, in design or execution phase, which apply energy efficiency and bioclimatic architecture criteria. 
  • Integral rehabilitation in a 9000 m2 municipal sports centre, integrating 500 m2 of solar collectors and efficiency installations. 
  • Treatment of green areas and open spaces in the ECO-PARK of La Gavia (36 Has) 
  • 5 requests for subsidies submitted to the Community of Madrid for activities in this field.
  • Requests for subsidies from the European Commission, for a Senior Citizens Centre and outdoor spaces bioclimate treatment.
Results
  • The new techniques applied are expected to obtain an energy saving and emissions reduction of about 50-75%.
  • The multidisciplinary team work and association with entities and companies generates synergy effects.
  • The activity of the enterprise is producing expectation and interest among public and private promoters, professionals in the field, construction and component manufacturing companies.
