'Sense of place' report shows what residents think of new housing developments
Introduction
CABE, the UK government's advisor on architecture, urban design and public space, recently conducted a national housing audit in the United Kingdom. The study found that housing schemes which failed to create a sense of place, had weak layouts and poorly designed and maintained public space. This finding was supported by the views of professionals working in the field. However, in order to provide a fuller picture, CABE also wanted to look into the opinions of the residents living in these new developments. The 'sense of place ' report shows what these people actually think and what implications their views have for those involved in the delivery of new homes.
Proposition
  • How do aspects of design quality, in combination with other factors, influence the attitudes and experiences of residents living in new developments?
Description
The 'sense of place' report compares residents' and professionals' views on new housing developments. It discusses the findings within the framework of why the creation of good quality places is important to all consumers of new homes.
The research builds on the view of 643 residents living in 33 new developments in the UK.
Methodology
The 'sense of place' report draws on the findings of a survey into the views of 643 residents living in 33 new developments. In addition, 704 residents took part in census surveys at six case study developments.
Conclusions
The research found that overall residents were very satisfied with their homes, but much less with their neighbourhoods. Many residents surveyed felt that their neighbourhoods did not have enough public space, was unsafe and did not have a distinctive character. In general it was felt that neighbourhoods lacked a certain 'sense of place'. CABE suggests that housebuilders and planners should therefore work much harder to achieve such a 'sense of place', which could be done by making better use of good design.
