Social housing and integration of immigrants in the European Union
Introduction
Social housing organisations accommodate large numbers of immigrants and ethnic minority groups in most European countries. Because of this they are at the frontline in the implementation of integration policies and programmes. The CECODHAS (The European Liaison Committee on Social Housing) working group on social policies has identified the need to understand the main problems facing tenants and social housing providers in the effort to contribute to greater integration.
Description
The Report 'Social housing and integration of immigrants in the European Union: tools for social housing providers' was launched by the CECODHAS Observatory at CECODHAS Seminar in Barcelona in September 2007. The report was prepared by the CECODHAS Observatory to support the work of the CECODHAS subgroup on the integration of immigrants.
The report includes an overview of the state-of–the-art of research and policy trends in the field of immigrant integration:
  • A country by country review which outlines the extent to which the role of housing policy is reflected in national regulatory frameworks.
  • Examples of housing and urban initiatives aimed at improving integration along with recommendations of criteria to guide the selection of good practice.
  • A reference list of European initiatives and organizations engaged with the issue of integration of immigrants.
The report is written as a tool to help member organisations reflect on the best approaches and tools to better fulfill their potential to foster integration and social inclusion.
