SHE: Sustainable Housing in Europe
Introduction
Creating sustainable housing is possible and should therefore be very normal. That is the main message of the SHE project: Sustainable Housing in Europe. Through different pilot projects in four European countries, sustainable housing is applied to the daily practice. As such, sustainable building should become an ordinary procedure.
Problem
The project tries to move the present examples of sustainable housing from the 'extraordinary' to the 'ordinary'. Also, the improvement of the link between buildings and neighbourhoods is of importance to the project.
Description
SHE: Sustainable Housing in Europe is a demonstration project funded by the European Commission under the 5th Framework Programme 'Research and Development'. It falls under the programme on 'Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development', Key Action 4 'City of tomorrow and cultural heritage. The project, coordinated by Federabitazione Europe (Italy), association of Confcooperative, started on March 2003 and will end on February 2008.
SHE aims to demonstrate the real feasibility of sustainable housing, through pilot projects in 4 different countries:
  • Denmark
  • France
  • Italy
  • Portugal
The cases all apply sustainable housing to the common praxis and integrate sustainability with the users' participation to the main steps of the constructing process.
Results
The following outcomes are expected:
  • The development, integration and demonstration of practical methodologies to improve assessment of best practice solutions for sustainable constructions.
  • The definition of new procedures to ensure effective direct participation of the final users in the decision-making process thus increasing environmental awareness.
  • An integrated approach aimed at the building up of the cities of tomorrow in accordance with sustainability principles.
