National Urban Policies in the European Union
Introduction
This publication aims to present the state of the art concerning explicit national urban policies in the member states of the European Union. The emphasis is on recent changes in national policies.
Description
The study is made by the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research (EURICUR) for the Dutch Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations and is an update of an earlier work. It presents a structured overview of national urban development patterns, administrative and financial frameworks, urban policy issues and challenges, as seen from a national perspective. It gives an overview for national and local authorities to learn from mutual experiences and for European institutions to learn how the influence of European policies is perceived in the member states.
Conclusions
European urban development is progressively challenged by ongoing processes of globalisation, the shift towards a knowledge-based and technology-driven economy, increasing mobility, demographic change, European integration, accumulation of social and environmental problems. The experience in the fifteen member states serve as input for a comparative analysis.
