The legacy of European regional funds in Merseyside
Introduction
Fourteen years of EU Objective One Structural Fund investment has been a catalyst for change in Merseyside - the Liverpool City Region. A new brochure presents a vivid picture of this transformation, not only on some of its urban landscapes but also in job creation and skills improvement. "EU& Merseyside 2000 to 2008" celebrates the legacy of the Objective One Programme, in developments such as the world-class Arena and Convention Centre on the waterfront (€66 million from the European Regional Development Fund). It pays tribute to the EU Objective One Programme in spearheading Merseyside's remarkable renaissance, and looks to the future as it seeks to consolidate and grow its economic base.
Description
Back in 1994, the statistics made for grim reading. High unemployment, serious social problems, decaying infrastructure…Liverpool made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Fourteen years of EU investment, in partnership with public, private and voluntary sectors, have transformed the situation. The development of landmark public spaces (e.g. St Helens town centre) and investment in key transport hubs, such as Liverpool John Lennon Airport, has positioned Merseyside as a place where people want to live, work and study. The impact of European investment on the physical and cultural assets of the area has raised its image and profile both with visitors and potential investors. This brochure gives an overview of projects that have been implemented at merseyside.
