Ahmet Akgündüz (2006). Labour Migration from Turkey to Western Europe, 1960-1974. A Multidisciplinary Analysis. IMISCOE Research. Amsterdam: AUP
Introduction
Labour Migration from Turkey to Western Europe, for the first time, considers the migration movement in a historical context.
Description
This book presents a study of labour migration from Turkey to the West during the official recruitment period of 1960-1974. For the first time, this migration movement is considered within its historical context.
The author analyses the impact of migratory movements to and from Turkey before 1960 on the migration process, as well as Turkey’s own modernisation-Westernisation policies in the Republican era and the historical dimensions of relations between Turkey and the West in the postwar years.
Last but not least, the study shows why, and under what circumstances, the guest worker system was introduced in Western Europe. The author makes use of extensive sources and draws on both historiography and social science of migration.
