Neu-Isenburg - Quartier IV
Introduction
Living in proximity with several generations within an urban neighbourhood which is integrated in terms of urban development and social aspects
Problem
Relocation of spoiling plants; creation of housing in the inner city; improvement of the housing and living conditions of the elderly; neighbourhoods spanning several generations
Description
Following the outhousing of spoiling plants, a new neighbourhood housing young and old people was built on an inner-city commercial brownfield, the so-called “Quartier IV” (Neighbourhood IV) in Neu-Isenburg. Comprehensive supply, support and meeting facilities enable to live independently until the old age in proximity with several generations. Urban renewal and local services for the elderly were sustainably combined on the occasion of this project.
Approach
Based on a prospective land procurement the city of Neu-Isenburg ensured properties for inner-city housing of young and older people in good time. The conception and implementation of this complex project idea was essentially supported by the close linking of local urban renewal and services for the elderly
Results
This project helped to redevelop a strongly burdened commercial area into an attractive and diverse urban neighbourhood. From the point of view of urban development it fosters independence and social participation until the old age and contributes to integrating different generations oriented to social areas. .
Learning experiences
Local land procurement, formal designation as a redevelopment area, interdisciplinary interaction of urban renewal and services for the elderly
