Amsterdam: Management Priority fund for renewal projects

Introduction

Inhabitants and employers do not participate enough in neighbourhood management. This is particularly the case with employers. Furthermore, the relationship between employers and inhabitants is not optimal. They have claims on the public spaces that are often at variance with each other.

Problem

The aim is to achieve the following by setting up renewal projects:

to strengthen the involvement of employers, institutions and (community) groups and thereby promote social cohesion;
to improve the quality of life and safety in the neighbourhood.

Description

This project stimulates dealing with the lack of public spaces in a creative way. The community (groups), employers and institutions indicate which changes or improvements they would like in their neighbourhood. The proposed projects have to meet a number of requirements. The fund can only be used for issues that fall outside the regular work. The projects must furthermore be of a renewing nature and result in something extra.

Approach

The spearheads within the Amsterdam programme document are:

Improving the physical business environment.
Stimulating entrepreneurship.
Improving the job market.
Socio-economic activation.
Quality of life and social cohesion.

Results

It is expected that the social cohesion in the neighbourhood will increase, as well as involvement in the neighbourhood.

EU involvement

URBAN II is an initiative of the European Commission. The aim is to support innovative projects in the field of urban regeneration in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The URBAN II projects will set an example for national urban policy. In the Netherlands, areas in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Heerlen have been allocated for the period 2000-2006. In Amsterdam the URBAN II programme is being carried out in eight neighbourhoods from four city districts (West binnen de Ring), with a total of 63,000 inhabitants.
