SELMA - The regional multi-cultural information service centre

Description

The main objective of the centre is to help employees consolidate their skills in multi-cultural and immigrant affairs

Network cooperation: Selma supports the creation of networks and exchange of information between professionals in multi-culturalism and immigration work (teachers of Finnish, youth network, guidance and counselling, equality, education for illiterates)
Network services: Selma gathers the information needed in this work on the site http://www.selma-net.fi/ (data on Finnish teaching in 45 educational establishments, other education for immigrants, group and club activities, training for employees, information about current issues, exchange forum for network information)
Mainstreaming: In 2005-2006, the goal was to secure continued operation by applying for funds for the period 2007-2008. Autumn 2006 is secured through funds from the Ministry of Labour and the Urban Programme of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area (requires confirmation of municipal finance).

Results

Meetings have gathered representatives of around 100 organisations.
The network services have been able to get an overview of, above all, the information available on education for immigrants. The users make up an established and growing group of people, and they are mostly pleased (very useful = 60% of municipal users).
The project has been working in the Caisa Cultural Centre in Helsinki 2003-2005 and in the SOCCA Centre of Expertise on Social Welfare in Helsinki Metropolitan Area 2005-2006.
