In 2007, Putnam claimed that in the short run, immigration and ethnic diversity tend to reduce solidarity and social capital. He presented new evidence from the United States that in ethnically diverse neighbourhoods residents of all ethnic groups tend to ‘hunker down’. Since Putnam only analysed data for the US, he proposed to test his claim in other countries. This paper by Bram Lancee and Jaap Dronkers provides the analysis of Putnam's claim for The Netherlands. The authors' main question is whether individual trust in neighbours and the neighbourhood can also be explained by ethnic diversity in the neighbourhood in Europe, as Putnam stated.
