European Neighbours' Day promotes solidarity among European citizens
Introduction
European Neighbours' Day is an event which occurs every year on the last Tuesday of May. This year the event will take place on May 27. Through exchanging and sharing experiences and good practices, this event gives citizens the opportunity to interact and join in the construction of a closer and more human Europe. The event was set up in 1990 in order to give people a feeling of common membership and forge a European identity based on socializing and solidarity. Cities or partner organization participating in the event, receive a communication kit to promote the celebration and rouse people's interest. But in the end it is up to citizens themselves to act and organize their own activities.
Description
The idea of Neighbours' Day was born in 1990, when a group of Parisian friends created the association "Paris d'Amis" in the 17th arrondissement of Paris to enforce the links of proximity and to mobilise people in order to act against isolation.
The "Paris d'Amis" association launched the "Immeubles en fête - la fête des voisins" operation in Paris' 17th arrondissement. It was an instant success: 800 apartment buildings participated, mobilising more than 10,000 residents. The following year, the operation took on a national dimension, mainly thanks to the support of the Association of the Mayors of France and the Social Habitat Union, with 500,000 people taking a drink with their neighbours.
In 2001, one million people took part, and this figure doubled the following year. In 2003, the operation took on a European dimension and rallied 3 million Europeans in France and Belgium, mainly in Brussels.
2004 marked a real success: 3,500,000 participants joined in the launch of " European Neighbours' Day" in Europe, and over 3,000,000 in France.
Tuesday 30 May 2006, 6 million people gathered in more than 580 European towns and cities (Prague, Brussels, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Riga, Dublin, Lisbon etc.) to get to know their neighbours by organising community parties in their street, in their garden, whilst enjoying music, food, games and so forth.
