National evaluation of Determined to Succeed: phase 1 – early implementation processes across Scotland - UK
Introduction
Reports key findings from research which examined the views of key stakeholders on initial planning and early implementation of Determined to Succeed in Scotland.
Description
Presents the findings from a literature review of relevant research and other publications from within Scotland and across the rest of the UK. Explores the views of twelve key stakeholders interviewed in order to gain an in-depth perspective on the perceived aims and objectives of the Determined to Succeed strategy. Looks at the progress made towards implementing the plans based on interviews with all thirty two local authority co-ordinators. Discusses schools’ experience of Enterprise in Education and the steps taken to implement the strategy based on case study visits to six authorities. Presents the conclusions of the evaluation and makes a number of recommendations for the future development of the strategy.
Background information
Determined to Succeed is an 86 million pound project which aims to prepare young people for the world of work through enterprising and entrepreneurial learning, work-based vocational learning and appropriately focused career education. This research constitutes phase 1 of the national evaluation of the strategy.
Methodology
The research was composed of four interrelated methods:
  • strategic interviews with twelve key stakeholders;
  • interviews with all thirty two local authority co-ordinators;
  • case study visits to one secondary, primary and special school within each of the six local authorities;
  • desk research, comprising the collection and review of relevant literature and research.
Conclusions
Overall, the evaluation finds that local authorities and schools had made considerable efforts to implement the Determined to Succeed strategy. The analysis of local authority delivery plans and interviews helped to develop a typology of implementation models.
