Information Literacy Skills - a Portal for Teachers
Introduction
Web portal helps teachers to find information needed in developing information literacy skills.
Problem
The portal aims to increase qualification level of teachers in information literacy skills: 
  • recognising the need for information;
  • constructing strategies for locating information;
  • locating and assessing information;
  • evaluating and extracting information;
  • organising and applying information;
  • evaluating the process and product.
Description
The portal has a selected collection to relevant links organised under following categories: (1) useful portals and databases, (2) learning materials introducing information literacy skills, (3) resources to be used in comprehensive school , post-comprehensive general and vocational education and adult education.
Approach
Teachers can use the portal in their own self-learning. Education department of City of Helsinki updates the portal and offers short courses for teachers.
Results
Teachers can increase their information literacy skills by web learning.
Beneficiaries
The portal is used by teachers of City of Helsinki and it is open to all.
Resources used
Over 40 persons from 13 departments from four cities of Helsinki Metropolitan Area participated in the building of the portal. Total costs were 43.000 euros. Crucial resources were the knowledge of e-learning of teachers and librarians who were involved in the process.
