Symposium: Educational and professional integration of young immigrants - FR
Introduction
This symposium gave researchers the possibility to sum up the results of the past studies on the professional integration of young immigrants and draws up the necessary lessons for the future studies.
Description
This symposium was dedicated to the access to employment. What do differences in access to employment - which seem to be linked to the different geographical origins of the immigrants - depend on? On school careers? On sociability networks? The symposium also dealt with the question of discrimination, which not only concerns employment but also employees, not only private employment, but also public employment in general. This discrimination affects girls and boys differently.
Background information
The organisation of the symposium comes from the following observation: the weakness of the means available to study immigration. Public research and statistics have to combine their efforts while keeping their diversity. Thus immigration must be tackled through different angles (economical, legal, political, demographical, historical…).
Organising this symposium, the Institut national d’études démographiques (INED) and the Direction à l’animation de la recherche, des études et des statistiques (DARES) aim at drawing up a state of the art of available forces. For instance, it was considered to find ways of gathering studies carried out by universities and by public institutes of statistics.
Methodology
The symposium was based on the data on school careers. The main goal was the evaluation of many studies and analysis in order to enable a better collective appropriation of both themes to tackle and knowledge produced.
Conclusions
The symposium does not aim at giving definitive conclusions on academic and professional integration of young immigrants. It aims at evaluating the available studies, researches and knowledge on the topic. It is also an opportunity to precise the priority themes to work on and the new ones to explore.
