Liège's Equality Diversity Label
Introduction
The Equality Diversity Label has been created in collaboration with the Belgian Regions. Its main objective is to strengthen diversity in the working place and to fight against discrimination and stereotypes by creating and implementing a diversity policy inside the company. It targets any public and private sector and association located in Belgium. Since 2006, 15 organisations (companies and cities) have committed in promoting diversity and equality within their organisation and in 2007, the Equality Diversity Label has been granted to some of them and particularly to three cities: Gent and Leuven in Flanders and Liège in Wallonia.
Problem
The objectives of the label whose action plan begins in May 2007 are manifold: a) ensure that diversity at the work place is recognised as a positive value, b) transform into a cardinal value and, base/predicate all our actions on the principle of equal opportunity, c) reflect the composition of the city's population in order to better serve the population, d) be a role model in matters concerning diversity, equal opportunity and non-discrimination, e) promote a corporate culture which considers/perceives diversity as a resource and not otherwise, f) integrate the "diversity" dimension into all political reflections and in Human resource management, g) inform the entire citizenry, h) develop a specific internal communications strategy, i) train top management and elected officials in matters concerning diversity and j) continuously and aggressively sensitise municipal employees on the theme given its complexity.
Description
There are three major axes of action. Axis 1) Corporate prodiversity culture. The city want to ameliorate the internal/external communication on the discrimination policy and to increase the employees awarness on the diversity issue. Axis 2) Prodiversity human resources management. With this aim, the city want to elaborate a diversity-friendly recruitment/selection procedure and a plan for a reception of newly recruited staff. It want to ensure equal access to training for all employees and guarantee equal access to internal mobility. Axis 3 - Gender equality.
Researcher: Sonia Gsir, Center for Ethnic and Migration Studies, University of Liège, Belgium.
Results
Results are ongoing. However, the evaluation/monitoring system is actually being thought out by the city's Human Resources department. The city's plan of action on diversity for the Label Equality and Diversity will be audited after being implemented.
Beneficiaries
The city's employees.
Resources used
The Equality Diversity Labl is granted and supported by the Federal Ministry of Employment and Labour for the Equality Diversity Label and by the Wallon Region.
