Children’s Town – Cosenza, IT
Introduction
The city of Cosenza has constructed a Children’s Town, which provides children en young people from two city districts with learning and recreational activities.
Problem
In two peripheral neighbourhoods in Cosenza, young people did not have enough access to interesting activities. As a result, they often turned to petty crime and their potential was easily wasted. The Children’s Town was created to reverse this situation.
Description
The Children’s Town is a safe place for children to play and learn. It is constructed like a real town, with a main road, a town hall, green spaces and a library. The Town offers a wide range of recreational, educational and catering facilities. It brings together the residents from the two involved city districts.
Approach
Through schools and youth groups, the children themselves are involved in designing and managing their town’s development.
Results
The Children’s Town has improved both the social and environmental quality of the two Cosenza neighbourhoods. It has actively promoted the integration of different groups within the communities, not only the children but also parents and elderly people.
EU involvement
This project was financially supported by the European Commission.
