Dundee XPlore Social Inclusion Partnership (SIP)
Introduction
The Xplore SIP aimed to tackle the social exclusion faced by disadvantaged 11-18 year olds in Dundee.
Description
The Xplore SIP aimed to tackle the social exclusion faced by 11-18 year olds in Dundee. Problems of social exclusion were addressed by:
  • establishing positive lifestyles and social relationships
  • creating opportunities for disadvantaged young people
  • building a more inclusive society for young people
  • developing self-esteem and a sense of personal responsibility in excluded young people.
The work of the SIP had a particular focus on young people in transition; for children at the lower end of the age range going from primary to secondary school and for young people leaving secondary school.
Approach
The SIP initially looked to build strong, effective and ultimately sustainable partnerships with a number of key agencies (Local Authority, Police, Health Providers, Job centre Plus) – a joined up approach to tackling social exclusion was seen as key. The SIP then established strong working relations in preparing the initial proposal for the SIP and the resulting partnership has been dynamic enough to adapt over the life of the SIP.
Results
The joined up approach to tackling social exclusion was key to achieving desired results with regard to changing lifestyles, creating opportunities and developing the self esteem of young people.
Xplore SIP is represented on a range of fora and SIP staff regularly present to a range of groups in order to raise awareness of Xplore’s work and also to endeavour to influence more strategically the ways in which services to young people are delivered in the Dundee area.

Resources used
The case study places a strong emphasis on the partnership working aspect of the project. The collaboration between partners in putting together the funding proposal for Xplore, established the habit and practice of partnership working for the continued work of the project.
The case study also reports that at some points in the life of the SIP it was felt that one partner (the council’s community development staff) played a dominant role.
