Rotterdam: Look at me!
Introduction
‘Look at me!’ is a project for and by young people. Fourth-year vocational college students supervise young people who are unemployed or who have dropped out of school. Step by step, the young people work together to create a personal goal for the unemployed/drop outs.
Problem
The aim of the project is to stimulate young people to participate in individual and group activities and work experience, with the aim of introducing them back into the education system or the job market.
Description
The special aspect of this project is that the common ground between these two groups of young people and the relatively small age difference creates trust and a positive environment to work from. Activities centred on sport, games and drama, and individual supervision are carried out by students from the INHOLLAND college. On the basis of a detailed project programme, every effort is made to instil personal goals in the young people and to encourage them to build on their skills, to enable them to function at school and/or work.
Approach
The spearheads within the Rotterdam programme document are:
  • Integrated approach of youth problems (family, education, leisure time, work).
  • Investments in culture and economy; the Cultural world district.
  • Complete improvement of the quality of the outdoors area in the territory.
  • Economisal-recreative (re-)development of the Rotte and its surroundings.
  • Participation of inhabitants and entrepreneurs with the driving Thea terras.
Results
Over a period of three years, 90 young people will be supervised by fourth-year vocational college students. Annual assessments will be carried out to determine whether the young people have achieved their goals and whether any further supervision is required.
EU involvement
URBAN II is an initiative of the European Commission. The aim is to support innovative projects in the field of urban regeneration in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The URBAN II projects will set an example for national urban policy. In the Netherlands, areas in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Heerlen have been allocated for the period 2000-2006. In Rotterdam URBAN II attention is directed at three neighbourhoods in 'Noord aan de Rotte', with a total of almost 30,000 inhabitants.
