South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Youth Project
Introduction
This case study describes how young people were engaged in preparing and contributing to a Community Action Plan.
Problem
It was felt important that young people should have an input into the development of priorities for the new Community Action Plan.
Description
This case study presents an example of how young people can be engaged in the process of preparing a Community Action Plan for an urban neigbourhood.
This was achieved through a local school council who prepared a Youth Action Plan based on data from a questionnaire for school students and other young people.
Approach
Planning began in 2004 when it was agreed that a suitable approach would be to approach a local school and youth service to deliver a youth survey that could feed into the Community Action Plan. These links were established and a questionnaire was designed and finalised by the school council and tutors.
The survey was then distributed to young people including those not at school with cooperation from the youth service. Surveys were analysed and fed into the Community Action Plan as well as a Youth Action Plan. Both were launched at a high profile event.
Results
  • 1280 young people were involved in preparation of the Community Action Plan (1260 school students and 20 other young people completed the questionnaire);
  • Key findings from the youth survey were included in Youth Action Plan and in Community Action Plan;
  • The Student Council were involved in Community Action Plan launch event, (through powerpoint and verbal presentations of the work);
  • Commitment by the Community Partnership Steering Group is set to expand so as to include 2 Student Council representatives to help guide the Plan’s implementation.
