Intercultural summer festival ‘DIES Internationalis’ - Arnsberg, Germany
Introduction
The DIES Internationalis is the city’s international summer festival. It takes place annually and has become a significant regional event. The focus of the festival lies on offering numerous culinary and cultural highlights. It is organised by the NGO Internationaler Arbeitskreis and the Foreigners’ Council; these are supported by civil initiatives, the migrant organisations, the city of Arnsberg, and the local media.
Description
The basic assumption and goal of the festival: during the almost yearlong preparation for the event, diverse groups with various ethnic, cultural and social roots come together and get to know and appreciate each other. By way of these cooperative activities, intercultural conflicts between inhabitants of different nationalities can be prevented before they occur.
Approach
The focus of the festival lies on offering culinary and diverse cultural highlights. The city supports the festival, which is organised by local NGOs, ideally and financially.
Results
The DIES Internationalis has become a significant, popular regional event. The city assumes that the goals mentioned are reached: diverse groups with various ethnic, cultural and social roots get to know and appreciate each other. By way of these cooperative activities, intercultural conflicts can be prevented before they occur.
