SOCCA, the Centre of Expertise on Social Welfare in Helsinki Metropolitan Area
Introduction
Socca works within social welfare sector research and development projects in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
Description
The task of the Centres of Expertise on Social Welfare is to secure
  • the development and transmission of expertise needed in the social welfare sector,
  • the development of primary services and the development and transmission of special services and expert services presuppossing higher expertise,
  • multifarious connections between basic, postgraduate and further education in the field, and
  • research, experiment and development activities
    (Act on Centres of Excellence on Social Welfare 1230/2001).
Socca works within the social welfare sector
  • carrying out development work and participating in cooperation,
  • conducting, supporting, coordinating and following up research, and 
  • acting as an educational coordinator.
Socca focuses, in particular, on the development of
  • urban social work,
  • family social work and support services for families,
  • services for the elderly, and
  • early childhood education.
Participants
SOCCA cooperates with the cities Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen. It is a part of the network of the Centres of Expertise that became statutory in Finland 2002.
