Soft stratification: lifestyle
Introduction
The research analyze social stratification in Hungarian society by spare-time activities.
Description
The survey describes main lifestyle trends from the 80’s to 2005. Analyse existing groups and suggests changes in social and society policies to create a stable middle class which has a significant economic and financial power. Social groups become more homogeny, mobility between them is sometimes impossible. Thus the gap between “high culture” consumers and the “passives” grows. The level of education and the family background influence free time activities, and according to the research the physical and mental condition also.
Background information
The research was prepared on demand of National Development Office (NFH) within the work out II. National Development Plan (NFT).
Methodology
Examines social structure trough different lifestyles. Divides society in groups based on the results of the examinations of high culture consummation, reading habits, social and sport activities.
Conclusions
It forecasts that in groups of higher degree the border between work and spare-time will vanish. The changes in the world of work like flexible, atypical employment, will increase integration and marginalisation at the same time. There’s a need of governmental action to ensure equality in education, to ensure the acquirement of basic competences like writing and reading.
