Immigrant Women in the Care Sector
Introduction
The care training programme provides condensed training programmes in the care sector at various levels. This training is oriented towards immigrant women who wish to take part the labour market and have an affinity for care but do not have a recognised Dutch diploma.
Problem
How can immigrant women who wish to take part in the labour market and have an affinity for care be trained to subsequently go on to regular work in the care sector?
Description
By means of a preliminary programme of approximately ten weeks, the candidates are prepared for the actual training in small groups under the guidance of a tutor. All aspects of care are covered in this preliminary programme, but also subjects like cultural differences. At the end of this programme the student is well equipped to judge whether working in the care sector really is the right choice for her and the tutor can advise at which level the candidate can start the training.
Approach
At the earliest opportunity the candidates begin conventional care training. They subsequently receive a proper trainee post and contact is maintained with both the training supervisor of the school and of the training post. Besides the classes in care training, the candidates receive  Dutch classes for one morning per week and additional training in applying for jobs and social education.
Results
  • Almost no dropout of students during the training.
  • 100% graduation rate up to now.
  • Just about all candidates have found jobs.
  • The self-respect of the women who have completed the training has increased considerably.
  • The increased self-respect has a positive effect on the family.
  • There is more understanding of the necessity for cooperation with the care institutions.
