Improving health through urban planning engagement
Introduction
A toolkit from the London Healthy Urban Development Unit which gives guidance on how NHS Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and local planning authorities can engage with one another and how joint working can be improved.
Description
The draft toolkit presents a synthesis of the lessons learned in three engagement projects, two in West London and one in Greenwich, arguing that the health and urban planning sectors are increasingly driven towards shared and overlapping agendas, resulting in the need to engage and collaborate.  Outcomes from the projects show the value of collaboration and identify scope for much more effective engagement to meet the common aims of delivering spatial planning and improved community health and well-being. Guidance is given on how to use the toolkit, and the various steps the toolkit provides are: an alignment model which describes the ideal relationship between a Primary Care Trust and local planning authority; getting started; setting objectives and priorities; preparing the engagement agreement; and making it work.
