In order to help the elderly remain independent as long as possible, we must pay attention to the characteristics of their living environment. The short action radius of elderly people means that they require small-scale and easily accessible surroundings; good design, good maintenance and small scale. This is borne out by the research performed by Maaike Galle and Marijn van der Wagt that was published in City Journal. The authors analysed four very different residential neighbourhoods and came up with interesting ideas for policymakers.
