Sport and games for quality of life in Kronehoef - Eindhoven, the Netherlands
Introduction
Sport Project Kronehoef in Eindhoven won the 2005 Richard Krajicek Award. Projects that target youth (at risk) and/or their caregivers qualify for the prize, which was set up in 2004 on the initiative of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and the Ministry of Education Culture and Science. Because the youth exercise more under supervision, boredom and nuisance are reduced.
Problem
How can sport activities for youths contribute to improving the quality of life in the district?
Description
The Loket W welfare association organises sport activities with and for youths in the Kronehoef district. Because of this, the youths have the opportunity to exercise 6 days a week as part of the sport activities. Time to get bored and cause a nuisance in the district is therefore reduced.
Volunteers supervise the activities and the safety contact person of Loket W supports the activities as a whole. He often visits during the activities. Then the messages that emanate from the district are discussed. The volunteers act as a sounding board for their supporters. They address the youth in the district on points that should increase the quality of life in the districts. They work together with a working group that not only performs the activities but also participates in meetings with the police, area office and the contact person of the safety project in the district. The course of the project can also be experienced by the residents themselves if they themselves attend the activities.
Approach
Each edition of the Kronehoef Gazet (neighbourhood newsletter) includes an article on the project’s progress. The jury has nominated the project, as youth nuisance and a feeling of danger have been successfully reduced in the district by organising and supervising sport and exercise activities for the youths in the district in the evenings and weekend.
Results
Getting the youths involved in local sport activities has reduced nuisance caused by bored youth and created a feeling of safety in the district.
The project has been awarded the 2005 Richard Krajicek Award, including 10,000 euros in prize money.
