Communities for Health: learning from the pilots
Introduction
This report draws together examples of case studies and best practice showing how organisations in 22 Communities for Health pilots have worked with communities to improve health and reduce health inequalities.
Description
The pilots show how communities have addressed a wide range of health issues and tackled health inequalities.
Rural and urban deprived areas have worked to:
  • address obesity,
  • healthy eating,
  • mental health
  • and sexual health.
A range of communities have been involved including:
  • black and ethnic minorities,
  • teenagers,
  • older people,
  • disabled people,
  • and gay, lesbian and bisexual people.
Background information
The Communities for Health programme was launched following the publication of the ‘Choosing Health’ White Paper. It aims to pilot new approaches to involve communities in tackling health issues.
The local authority-led pilots have been working together with communities, the NHS and other local partners to address health issues.
Methodology
The research project involved a description of 22 initiatives. Each case study includes information on:
  • the target groups,
  • the issues being addressed,
  • and the methods used (workshops, awards, campaigns, advertising, promotional material, surveys, training, websites etc).
Conclusions
Lessons from the current research will help to inform the implementation of the next stage of the Communities for Health programme.
