Internet based information centre for citizens
Introduction
The project creates an Internet based information centre for citizens, located in a library, with wide variety of IT education courses and personal counselling.
Problem
Digital divide and inadequate access to information society.
Description
The project is part of EU Urban II Community Initiative Programme. In Finland, the Government allotted Urban II Programme to the Greater Metropolitan Area, especially for developing its eastern parts, Helsinki-Vantaa.
Approach
This project, running in two Vantaa city libraries in 2002-2006, brings free-of-charge information society services within easy reach of all residents so as to improve equality of IT skills among those in danger of being marginalized in this respect, such as senior citizens, the unemployed, and different ethnic groups. Residents are guided by staff in the use of computers, information retrieval and media reading skills.
Results
The project develops tailored teaching programmes for different groups and directs them to further studies. The Info-cabin acts as a neighbourhood information centre, which supports the opportunities for local residents and organizations to take part in society's activities and increases the community's sense of togetherness.
Beneficiaries
Senior citizens, immigrants, low incomers.
Resources used
Total budget € 343 000, four full-time workers, 20 PC computers with Internet access and software, office space. Needed skills are IT technology and management expertise.
