Mobile IT workshop in Rouen
Introduction
Enhancing the digital skills of illiterate persons.
Problem
Familiarisation with computers for a marginalised Roma public often with poor reading and writing abilities.
Description
The social centre for Roma “Relais Accueil des gens du voyage” in the urban area of Rouen has created a mobile IT workshop to strengthen the academic accompaniment and integration of illiterate marginalised persons of all ages by familiarising them with computers.
Approach
The mobile workshop operates on request and by appointment, moving among family caravans. The fixed area at the social centre offers three slots. For each session, a pick-up service is arranged on the urban area’s three sites with amenities.
Results
Some forty young people and a dozen adults use the computers regularly. From the qualitative point of view, the tool is of interest to a public often reluctant to follow conventional learning processes. In terms of public action, closer involvement with the teacher seconded by the national education system and better follow-up of schoolchildren through the use of a common CD-Rom game.
Beneficiaries
Gypsy households domiciled at the address of the social centre under the RMI (minimum income for inclusion) support scheme, i.e. about 550 families.
Resources used
2000 Budget: 13,100€. Composition of the team: 1 referee and 2 educational workers; material resources: 2 portable computers and 4 desktop computers.
