'Language in the Neighbourhood' - project
Introduction
Taal in de Buurt (Language in the Neighbourhood) is a dual project that was carried out within the framework of the old comers policy in Schiedam. Attention is paid to the Dutch language as well as to parenting support and social orientation.
Problem
How can you offer a low-threshold project that guides participants towards vocational or adult education?
Description
Taal in de Buurt is a low threshold project. In addition to teaching the Dutch language, it aims to get the participants involved and guide them towards vocational or adult education. The project focused on old comers (i.e. individuals of 18 years or older born outside of the EU and in possession of a valid residence permit or Dutch passport), especially female old comers.
They mainly live their lives within their own community, attending to domestic work, their children and in some cases their parents as well. This group is difficult to reach through regular NT-2 courses offered by local authorities because the women do not take the necessary steps on their own initiative.
Approach
The Dutch language is mastered using speaking skill exercises. This involves role playing or individual assignments that the students have to do outside the lessons. Attention is paid to not only only on the Dutch language, but also on health care, child raising, guidance on subsequent education and careers, knowledge on the Dutch society and computer skills. The women put what they learn into practice in their daily lives by, for example, visiting their doctor on their own.
Results
  • The project has a wide reach within the target group.
  • There were 65 participants in 2003 and 2004.
  • The language level of the participants was increased.
  • A great many participants proceeded to take follow-up courses.
  • Eight participants continued on to vocational education.
  • Ten participants continued on to basic education.
  • Two participants continued on to a job.
  • 41 continued on to do the follow-up naturalisation course of Bureau Medelanders (Nonnative Office).
