Language meetings for immigrant women
Introduction
In the spring of 2003, Enova emancipatie adviesbureau Drenthe (Drenthe Enova Emancipation Consultancy) successfully implemented the ‘language meeting’ pilot in cooperation with Vrijwilligerscentrale Assen (Assen Volunteer Centre).
Problem
How can immigrant women make the Dutch language their own and how can they be given sufficient insight and skills into the customary etiquette that is needed to integrate into society?
Description
At this time, the project is running as a structural component at the Vrijwilligerscentrale in Assen as part of the target group policy. Enova is developing tailored 'Language Meetings' for interested partners in Drenthe. 'Language Meetings' has been designed to solve the abovementioned problems in one go.
A 'Language Meeting' is a meeting between an immigrant participant and a Dutch-speaking volunteer with the objective of practicing Dutch speaking and listening skills. This interaction gives the immigrant the opportunity to learn Dutch etiquette and social codes in person. The immigrant also learns to appreciate volunteer work.
Approach
The work is based on the wishes and needs of the participant. The volunteer and the participant meet each other approx. 15 times at home or at the Vrijwilligerscentrale in Assen. The meetings occur weekly. The frequency and the duration are agreed upon between the two. There are also group meetings during the project for both volunteers and participants.
The purpose of this is to, on the one hand, support the volunteers in their work and, on the other hand, to discuss the progress regarding language and volunteer work with the participants. Before the 'Language Meetings' course is concluded, the two parties discuss the possibility of volunteer work or another activity which will help the participant to maintain the acquired knowledge and skills.
Results
  • More than 25 meetings took place.
  • Immigrant women who felt isolated and who had no contact with Dutch society participated in a project for the first time outside their home.
  • Participation broke the isolation and removed the fear of participating in Dutch society.
  • The participants have made clear progress with regard to the Dutch language.
  • The project promoted the flow of participants to a language course, education, voluntary work and paid work.
  • Finally, the meeting between the volunteers and the immigrant participants contributed to mutual respect for each other’s values and norms.
