Naturalisation Reversed - Delft

Introduction

By order of the City of Delft, the Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep education provider put together the Naturalisation Reversed Course and offered it to residents of Delft.

Problem

How can you bring immigrants and native Dutch people together to promote integration?

Description

During this course, participants were introduced to the Turkish and Moroccan language and culture. The City of Delft believes that this course is a good way to bring immigrants and native Dutch people together. One can promote the integration process by creating an understanding for other cultures.

Approach

A teacher of Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep and a Turkish or Moroccan volunteer gave the course. The course covered making contact, customs and traditions, food, history, politics, religion and included lessons in the Turkish and Moroccan language, amongst others. The course comprised six free weekly meetings.

The motivations for participation were diverse. Some people see it as a way of strengthening their relationships with Moroccan or Turkish neighbours. Others work with Turks and Moroccans and believe this course is a good way of getting to know the language and customs of their colleagues.

Results

The first edition of the individual Turkish and Moroccan naturalisation courses started at the end of October 2004 and was quickly fully booked.
Both courses, which comprised six lessons, had more than 20 participants.
The Naturalisation Reversed Course in Delft was a success. There was so much interest that Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep decided to offer the lessons again in 2005.
