Tailored language activities - Rijswijk
Introduction
Newcomers who don’t speak Dutch and for whom regular language training does not suffice receive a language training that is tailored to their individual level, situation and age.
Problem
How can the Dutch speaking and reading skills of newcomers be improved?
Description
Various language activities allow newcomers from a wide range of backgrounds to learn the Dutch language. The main focus of these activities is placed on newcomers for whom the regular language training does not work, who have insufficient opportunity to practice their Dutch with others and who have insufficient spelling and writing skills.
The programme is aimed at people who are in a difficult situation, e.g. older illiterate women refugees and refugees who have lived through traumatising events. Newcomers who have not been included in an official integration project can also participate in the language activities. Enthusiastic volunteers and experts support the language activities. The activities can thus be tailored to individual needs.
Approach
The following subprojects are offered to newcomers:
  • Individual language training
  • Conversation classes
  • Linguistic workouts
  • Homework support
  • Language and play for youths
  • Language and play for older, illiterate female refugees
Results
• In 2002, fifteen language trainers were involved in these language activities.
• In 2002, 87 newcomers took part in one of the language activities.
