Tackling child poverty in London: a guide to borough initiatives and good practice
Introduction
A guide to a range of initiatives in various London boroughs which are successfully tackling the causes of child poverty.
Description
The report gives details of projects across London which are:
  • improving lone parent employment;
  • improving black and Asian ethnic minority employment;
  • working with the voluntary sector;
  • working with the business community;
  • working with Jobcentre Plus and other partners;
  • improving employment opportunities for disabled people and the parents of disabled children;
  • innovative in childcare provision;
  • improving benefit take-up and tackling financial exclusion.
Background information
The research was undertaken to help London boroughs share ideas and good practice by profiling a range of projects and initiatives which are successfully tackling the causes of child poverty in the capital city.
The organisation which undertook the research, London Councils, is currently developing a model for a more holistic, strategic approach to tackling child poverty at a borough level.
Methodology
Various types of initiative were identified, for example, councils working to improve lone parent employment, or councils working with the voluntary sector, and for each of the types identified, two or three case studies were written up.
Conclusions
There is a diverse range of issues which impact on London’s child poverty levels and there are also a number of issues which are not traditionally thought of as having a direct impact on child poverty. For this reason, London Councils will be looking in more detail at the opportunities and benefits of a strategic, borough-wide approach to tackling child poverty in London.
