Papageorgiou Regional General Hospital – Thessaloniki, GR
Introduction
To address the lack of hospital facilities in the western part of the city of Thessaloniki, the Papageorgiou Hospital was opened.
Description
The new Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki is an impressive facility. It has a wide range of clinics, including: pathology and surgery, cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and orthopaedics. It also has an outpatient clinic (by appointment) with 60 consulting rooms, in all the specialities, and with the capacity to deal with 1,200 patients per day and 300,000 per year.
Results
The original objective was to address the lack of hospital facilities in the entire western part of the city, as residents in this area previously had to travel long distances to a hospital. This objective has been achieved. Apart from the diverse range of services offered, and its large capacity, Papageorgiou Hospital is also noted for its ultramodern facilities.
In 2002, some 18,500 patients received inpatient care, whilst 180,000 people were seen in the outpatient clinic
Resources used
The project was cofinanced by the Ministry of Health, the regional authorities, the Papageorgiou Foundation (a private foundation established to oversee the project) and the European Union.
Total cost: 88.273 million euros
EU contribution: 53.847 million euros
