Including marginalised people in society and in the labour market
Introduction
Even though Europe is one of the richest regions in the world, poverty and social exclusion are still substantially present. Therefore, reaching out to people at the margins of society and the labour market is both an economic and social priority. The European Commissions aims to address this issue by calling upon EU institutions, local/national governments and social partners to take further steps to improve social justice.
Description
The European Commission has launched a public consultation on how to promote the active inclusion of marginalised people in society and in the labour market. Despite being one of the richest regions in the world, the EU and its Member States are still far from reaching the EU objective to make a decisive impact on the eradication of poverty by 2010: 16% of Europe’s population is at risk of financial poverty, one in five lives in sub-standard housing, 10% live in households where nobody works, long-term unemployment approaches 4% and the proportion of early school leavers is over 15%. Commissioners have also adopted a communication: "Modernising social protection for greater social justice and economic cohesion: taking forward the active inclusion of people furthest from the labour market". This will launch the second-stage consultation of the social partners. The Commission will examine all the contributions received, make public its conclusions and decide on appropriate follow-up.
