2008 European Year of Intercultural Dialogue
Introduction
2007 saw the successful implementation of the European Year of 'Equal Opportunities for All'. 2008 will now be the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Because European countries are becoming increasingly diverse as a result of the enlargement of the EU, deregulations of employment laws and globalisation, intercultural dialogue has also gained importance. The Year will encourage Europeans to explore the benefits of Europe's cultural heritage and traditions in order to foster European identity and citizenship. Throughout the year, many different events and activities are organised by the European Commission, Member States and partner organisations.
Description
Intercultural dialogue is an important priority of the European Union. For the 2008 Year of Intercultural Dialogue eight major topics have been identified:
  • Culture and the media
  • Education/Science
  • Migration
  • Minorities
  • Multilingualism
  • Religion
  • The workplace
  • Youth
The Year is supported by several official EU- and Member State ambassadors, who are high-profile figures committed to its aims. Among the ambassadors are names such as Charles Aznavour, Paulo Coelho and Henning Mankell.
Many different events will be organised in the light of the Year of Intercultural Dialogue:
  • EU Projects
  • National Projects
  • EU & 3rd country projects
  • Other projects
The events agenda for the 2008 Year is available via the link provided below. There are still many possibilities for organisations to become active and organise their own activities with some support of the European Commission.
