Mobility within, towards, out of and around Brussels
Introduction
Road traffic in Brussels is growing denser and denser; the speed and regularity of public ground transport has regressed; plans to launch a bicycle sharing service, such as Paris's Vélib, are pedalling uphill, and delivering merchandise has become an ordeal.
Description
What is going on in Brussels? How can it be that, despite a quarter of its budget earmarked for mobility, the Region is incapable of doing better and has set a distant target (2020) for the objective to reduce automobile pressure by 20%?
  • How to make quality mobility available to all?
  • How to reduce the automobile's hold on public space?
  • How to make the future RER a true asset for mobility into and out of Brussels?
  • How to turn public transport stops into full-fledged urban spaces?
  • How to rethink the STIB/MIVB fare policy?
  • What about an urban distribution centre with electric vehicles?
  • What kind of financing for a "Marshall Plan" to develop a policy for sustainable mobility in Brussels?
Knowledge dissemination
Within the framework of the Citizens’ Forum of Brussels, Brussels Studies published this synopsis on mobility in Brussels. A conference debate was organised on January 12th, 2009. It was hosted at IHECS, in Brussels.
Conclusions
Several policy options are mentioned in the article:
  1. establish a Mobility Observatory;
  2. encourage locations that require less car travel;
  3. eliminate motor transport for a maximum number of trips;
  4. make the RER a true asset for mobility into and out of Brussels;
  5. reduce the offer of road infrastructure in step with improvements in the alternative transport offer;
  6. invest in the different forms of public transport, considering all the parameters and the overall urban system;
  7. turn public transport stops into full-fledged urban spaces;
  8. rethink the fare policy of the STIB/MIVB;
  9. maintain the place of urban logistics and promote the use of vehicles that respect;
  10. a Regional Transport Organising Authority integrated in an Urban Transport Communitythe environment;
  11. get the concerned actors involved;
  12. find an overall solution to the financing problem.
