Accessibility and mobility in the territory of Granada, ES
Introduction
Project addressed to improve accessibility and mobility in a sustainable way.
Problem
Granada is a city of services of regional reference. Its defining features at the beginning of this project were:
  • An inadequate transport system lacking basic infrastructures, which is partly responsible of the widespread use of private vehicles.
  • Poor accessibility of the city centre, which is located on a hillside.
  • Lack of parking space and high air pollution.
Description
The main objectives of this project are:
  • To solve the city centre accessibility problems, in particular in the districts of Albaycín and Realejo and the access to the Alhambra palace, thus improving the quality of life in the city
  • To recover public spaces for pedestrian access.
  • To promote less polluting means of transport and develop sustainable habits for the mobility in the city. Alternative means of transport (bike, walk). It is essential to involve the citizens in this process.
Results
  • The initial 16% of the city in good noise conditions (under 55 Dba) has been increased to a 40%.
  • Programmes such as “Better Without Car” account for the reduction of around 1000 vehicles a day. 5.000 drivers have joined this campaign.
  • 35% increase in users of the public transport system since 1992, with traffic restriction policies (Public Transportation Enterprise).
  • More than 200 Has of the city centre have pedestrian priority, with the 90% of investments in public spaces for the improvement of pedestrian conditions.
  • The traffic pressure is reduced from 17000 vehicles per day to less than 3000.
  • An opinion poll filled by citizens shows that the 14% has changed their usual way of transport and more than 50% think that the changes are positive.
