TRAM Transport System - Alicante, ES
Introduction
The goal of the project is to improve the public transport system of Alicante in order to promote sustainable mobility habits.
Problem
The initial situation is similar to other medium size European cities, where the specialization in land use and the increase of population and quality of life have contributed to an increase in mobility.
The growing use of private vehicles generates several problems: pollution, lack of parking space, accidents, lack of accessibility... In addition, Alicante is an important tourist region, so the problem is aggravated in certain seasons.
Description
The TRAM project intends to modernize the public transport system in Alicante, using energy rationally, respecting the environment and easing the traffic congestion and favoring intermodality. It also provides the possibility for people to move quickly, comfortably, and at a reasonable price. The community itself should benefit from this model of public transport, which promotes sustainable development through the mobility habits.
Approach
The new model of public transport system in Alicante is designed as a network in which the main lines are covered by the light train, TRAM, while buses are used to take passengers to the TRAM lines and to distribute them to their final destinations.
Results
The traffic estimates of the TRAM project for the period 2007-2010 are of 14,8 million passengers/year. The new public transport system is expected to change the mobility habits of the citizens, prioritizing public transport and contributing to traffic relief and lower air pollution.
Since TRAM is subsidized, it will be affordable to the great majority of the population, with no age, gender, handicap or income level discrimination.
