Breda station development area - Breda, the Netherlands
Introduction
Breda has been designated by the government as a New Key Project and it wants to present itself in the coming years as the 'The Gateway to Brabant’. Breda wants to further expand its Euro-regional position when the city receives its shuttle link to the High Speed Line. Moreover, Breda is a crucial link within the Brabant City urban network.
Problem
The development in and around the station of Breda is described in a Master Plan. The line of approach of the programme to the Station area is a balanced mix of residences, business premises and facilities.
Description
The revamped Breda Central Station and surrounding area will give the offices and commercial services in the area new opportunities. The municipality also wants to improve the quality of life in the area. In addition, the plan improves the urban development structure with the surrounding area and the relationship with the town centre. More cohesion and unity is created, with the station being the central identification point.
To improve the urban structure, a new boulevard will be built parallel to the railway. Green public spaces and trees along the main roads will provide green spaces. A mix of purposes will be created in the area to promote vitality and social safety: offices, shops, leisure facilities, and educational and congress facilities. Approx. 575 residences will be built in the Station area.
Results
  • The most important purposes are office space, cultural relaxation, retail and residences.
  • The opening up of the areas to cars and public transport, parking facilities and other support facilities are tailored to this combination of purposes.
  • In the area of culture, the municipality is developing facilities, which could be visited in a short time and in succession. They have a charisma and contribute to the dynamics of the area. Here one refers to a multifunctional exhibition centre, a centre for art and music and a house for arts.
  • Breda, as 'The Gateway to Brabant', acts as an important link in this European High Speed Line network to the benefit of the Brabant City public transport network. Breda is endeavouring to improve and link up the public transport networks, including connections and systems.
  • The Station area will be developed in a manner appropriate to a large city.
  • High buildings are not shunned, but they will remain on a scale with the rest of the city. New offices will be built in the area, which will promote Breda’s status as Euro-regional service centre.
